From the I-49 service road to Moss St. we have (4) subdivisions (Bellemont Estates, Essen Heights, Willow Bend and Grand Oaks), two schools (Acadian Middle & Plantation Elementary), two churches. This is primarily a 100% residential area which does not need commercial power lines devaluing the property values, situating obscene light poles in citizens front yards while reducing their frontage and possibly creating health hazards for some of our citizens, especially seniors.
If this goes through, a pole will be less than 50 feet from our physical house. Having looked at the photos of similar poles in our city, I find the prospect of having this humongous power pole near our home a daunting problem.
I would like the city council to make a study of other routes down more commercial and industrial streets and consider the financial and health losses to the residents along Butcher Switch road and adjacent neighborhoods.
Something must be done to make this area of Lafayette safer not create more issues.
Oops! The reference about schools on Butcher Switch should have stated “Evangeline Elementary” instead of Plantation… Sorry !

LUS has a project that would place multiple high voltage electrical power lines on East Butcher Switch Road from I-49 to Moss Street.
These high voltage lines would be over existing low voltage lines & our existing poles would be replaced with 100ft. Metal poles with 3ft. diameter poles.
How can LUS justify placing high voltage electrical power lines on the most populated & the most residential 1 1/2 miles of East Butcher Switch & of all the other streets in this project.
This 1 1/2 miles of East Butcher Switch has 4 subdivisions, 2 schools and 2 churches.
The residents of East Butcher Switch are concerned about their health & safety from living near high voltage electrical lines. Also of much concern is the decreased property values due to aesthetics- the unsightly appearance of the enormity of wires & lines-large, high poles- restrictions & humming noises from wires, line’s and poles.
This project has not had any public hearings. The only public notified by LUS is the property owners living on the side of the street where the poles & lines would be placed because a signed servitude agreement is needed.
As property owners at 505 East Butcher Switch we refuse to sign a servitude agreement for a portion of our property until the project has public discussions and the area residents have satisfactory resolutions of issues and/or appropriate monetary compensations.

We don’t want that in our neighborhood. When you put them on the south side then we can talk . You always want to bring down the Northside of town. But you build the Southside up. You would had never ask to put that on the other side of town. We are Will not sit down on this one!
There is no reason to run these electrical lines through neighborhoods. The proposed map clearly shows the better route would be to continue East on Pont Des Mouton Rd. to Moss, then follow Moss North to there substation. The lines would be going by businesses, not homes. That would also prevent future lawsuits over people getting cancer from the magnetic fields created by these power lines. The higher the voltage going through them, the stronger the magnetic field becomes. Also, if you have 6 lines, the field will be multiplied by 6. Not good!
I for one do not want these in or around my neighborhood, What can we do to stop this?
Please try to join us at the meeting with LUS to make your voice heard. The meeting is 11/2/22 from 5-6pm at the Dupuis Rec Center at 1212 E. Pont des Mouton Rd.
Why in Gods name can’t the city of Lafayette run these lines east on PONT De Mouton road to Moss st,then go north on Moss St.to proposed destination of Sub Station.
Let’s put the proposed route up for a yea or nay vote to the residents that it will affect.
That’s the American way!!!
We just moved to area and this is not needed in our area, that WE as neighbors DID NOT agree upon. First we would have to deal with construction in people yards – that they bought and work so hard for, then these pole will we surround by trees they will possible fall, blocking the road during storm or hurricane and we will stick without power for days. This is unexceptionable. Also I feel bigger issue is we’re the city money can do- schools camera and trainer security to protect kids, street lights on the service road, more drainage for flooding and how about our street sign that is leaning. We are already in an inflation Peroid, don’t add to that, we have family to feed and lights to keep on. There are other areas that need help. Besides it would of been nice if we got a heads up to the meeting we would of took of work to be there but instead we have to work because of the cost of pole we may be tax for.
As a home owner in Belmont, I can only comment on the fact if this was proposed on the south side, you can bet your last dollar it would not happen. Why have the plans changed from what is published on this site? Pont Des Mouton to Moss certainly is more acceptable. Less population more commercial. To affect so many homeowners is ludicrous. This definitely sounds like a political good ole boy deal!!
